Royal Huisman's Unfurled wins Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta

Published: 11 June 2011

The fourth edition of this annual event has attracted an impressive fleet of 27 sailing yachts ranging upto 57.5m in length. The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta is once again hosted by the exclusive Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, located in the enchanting village of Porto Cervo on the northern coast of Sardinia.

This year’s fleet included two Royal Huisman stablemates: Unfurled (launched in 2000) and the fleet’s largest, the flybridge performance ketch Twizzle which was delivered to her owners last year.

The owner of the 34m/112’ Germán Frers designed Unfurled has been racing his Alustar aluminium yacht in Porto Cervo for more than a decade, but keeps on coming back year after year. Last year he also joined the winners podium with a 3rd overall place for Unfurled. ‘The place, the people, the organisation are all wonderful. We really enjoy being here and the sailing is sensational.’

After a windy week Unfurled wins the Cruising Division of 19 aluminium and composite yachts. Unfurled’s 1st and 2nd places at respectively 30-mile and 27-mile race courses earned victory in the Cruising Division. Sincerest congratulations to the owner of Unfurled, his captain and crew.

Twizzle may not have finished with a prize, but the owners said they enjoyed themselves all the same. ‘It was a great race, nothing broke and no one was hurt. Safety takes priority in such winds, and we have learned a lot. We’re used to sailing in strong winds, but racing in strong winds is different.’
